Dargues Gold Mine – EPA concludes investigation into discharge of sediment laden water

27 FEBRUARY 2020 BY CHASE DINGLE On 17 September 2019, Dargues Gold Mine self-reported to the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (the EPA) a small discharge of sediment laden water through an earth containment bund which resulted in a sediment discharge to Spring Creek and into Majors Creek. The EPA has concluded its investigation into the matter and has issued Dargues Gold Mine with a $15,000 Penalty Infringement Notice.

Dargues Gold Mine’s General Manager Shannon Green said that “while the event was regrettable, he was pleased with the professional response provided by staff onsite during and following the incident.

The company expresses genuine contrition and remorse in relation to the incident and regrets any concerns that it may have caused within our community. The company is a good corporate citizen and committed to upholding a high environmental standard. The company provided a proactive response to the incident, including prompt notification to the EPA and other stakeholders and cooperated with the EPA both during the incident and during the investigation”.

The EPA’s investigation noted that Dargues Gold Mine has been meeting a high standard of waterway protection and that it immediately identified and implemented measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident. The EPA further noted that significant resources have been dedicated to the design and operational procedures to manage stormwater at the premises as well as to audit pollution controls.

The Dargues Gold Mine have learnt from this experience and implemented a range of improvement measures that are above and beyond those approved by an independent expert. These additional measures were successful in managing surface water run-off during a significant rainfall event between 6 – 11 February 2020, when the site received over 150mm of rainfall.
